JAMB Warns Candidates Against Accepting Admissions Outside CAPS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned prospective university and other tertiary institution students against accepting admission offers outside its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), cautioning that such offers may not be recognised as valid.
The board issued the warning on Monday, October 12, 2026, through a message shared on its official social media platforms. It urged candidates seeking admission for the 2026/2027 academic session to verify their admission status through CAPS before accepting offers from institutions.
According to JAMB, candidates who accept admission outside the approved process risk complications with their admission records and may encounter difficulties establishing their status as duly admitted students.
“An admission offered by an institution outside the approved JAMB admission process may not be recognised as valid,” the board stated.
It added that accepting such an offer could put a candidate’s academic journey at risk.
The warning was issued as part of the board’s JAMB Explained series, which addresses questions about illegal admissions, their consequences and the steps candidates can take to protect themselves.
JAMB explains why CAPS is important
CAPS is the digital platform developed by JAMB to manage and coordinate admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
According to the board, the system was introduced to improve transparency, automate admission procedures and reduce problems associated with the former manual admission process.
The platform enables candidates to check their admission status, review provisional offers and confirm admissions through the approved process. It also allows institutions to process candidates within the framework established by JAMB.
The board maintains that admissions must be processed through its system and supported by the appropriate documentation.
Its 2026 admission guidelines state that admission offers must come through JAMB and be accessible through its e-Facility platform. The guidelines further warn that an admission offer made without a JAMB admission letter is illegal and will not be recognised by the board.
The requirements apply to candidates seeking admission through the recognised process, regardless of whether the institution has communicated an offer directly to them.
Candidates advised to verify offers before accepting
JAMB urged prospective students to check their admission status through CAPS before making decisions based on messages, letters or other communications from institutions.
Candidates should confirm that an offer appears in the official system and follow the required acceptance procedures.
The warning is particularly relevant to candidates who receive admission notifications through unofficial channels or are asked to complete admission arrangements outside the recognised process.
An institution communicating an offer does not, by itself, establish that the candidate’s admission has been properly processed and recognised by JAMB.
Candidates should therefore avoid assuming that an offer is valid until they have confirmed their status through the appropriate platform.
JAMB has also warned that candidates who accept admission outside CAPS do so at their own risk, adding that the board will neither recognise nor condone such admissions.
Admission deadlines remain in place
The warning comes amid the ongoing 2026/2027 admission exercise.
JAMB announced in September that CAPS had been restored following a temporary disruption and urged tertiary institutions to accelerate their admission processes to meet the approved deadlines.
According to the board’s earlier announcement, the deadline for the 2026/2027 admission exercise is October 31, 2026, for public universities, November 30 for private universities, and December 31 for other tertiary institutions.
JAMB also advised candidates who had been awaiting their examination results to upload or verify their credentials promptly so institutions could consider them during the admission process.
With the admission exercise continuing, candidates are expected to monitor their status and respond to official offers within the applicable timelines.
How candidates can check their admission status
Candidates can access the Central Admissions Processing System through JAMB’s official website and follow the instructions provided for checking and accepting admission offers.
The board’s official CAPS page explains the platform’s role in coordinating tertiary admissions and enabling candidates to monitor their admission progress.
Prospective students should ensure that their admission status is correctly reflected in the system and obtain the required JAMB admission documentation.
Candidates who encounter discrepancies between an institution’s communication and the information displayed on CAPS should seek clarification from the institution and JAMB rather than assume that the offer has been fully approved.
The board’s latest warning reinforces its position that admission into a recognised tertiary institution requires compliance with the official admission process.
For candidates awaiting placement, verifying an offer through CAPS before accepting it could help prevent avoidable complications as the 2026/2027 admission exercise progresses.
