Fresh Plateau Violence Leaves Pastor, Travellers and Others Dead in Barkin Ladi, Riyom

At least nine people have been reported killed following a series of attacks across communities in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State, deepening concerns over recurring violence in parts of the state. The incidents occurred between the night of Saturday, September 19, and the morning of Sunday, September 20, with travellers, a pastor and residents among those reported dead. Accounts from community leaders and multiple Nigerian news organisations indicate that five people travelling towards Gana-Ropp in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area were killed after their vehicle came under attack on Saturday night. The victims were reportedly labourers travelling as passengers when the incident occurred. Community representatives said their bodies were later recovered from the area. Pastor killed while travelling to church Another deadly incident was reported on Sunday morning around Dorowa Babuje, also in Barkin Ladi. Two people, one of them identified as a pastor, were reportedly killed while travelling to church. Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, confirmed reports of the attacks and called for greater security presence in the affected communities as well as an investigation aimed at identifying and prosecuting those responsible. Separate fatalities were also reported elsewhere in the area. A woman was reportedly killed at Baten Wereng in Riyom Local Government Area on Saturday night, while another person was reported dead at Ratyidi in Fan District. Taken together, those incidents bring the widely reported death toll to at least nine. However, Premium Times reported that the Plateau State Police Command had not issued a consolidated official casualty figure for the attacks as of Sunday. This means the figure remains based largely on accounts provided by residents and community representatives and could be revised as authorities complete their investigations. Residents flee amid reports of continued gunfire Beyond the fatalities, the attacks caused renewed anxiety in Dorowa Babuje, Kantoma and surrounding areas. Residents reported hearing additional gunfire from around the Kantoma axis on Sunday, leading some families to move women and children away from vulnerable locations. Community resident Lawrence Shong told reporters that gunshots could still be heard around midday on Sunday and that women and children were being evacuated. Military personnel were subsequently reported to have been deployed to the area. Community representatives called for sustained security presence rather than temporary intervention following attacks. There were also reports of livestock losses during the violence. Several cattle were said to have been killed or stolen around Dorowa Maranba and the Kantoma axis during the early hours of Sunday. Gambo Abubakar, Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in Barkin Ladi, confirmed reports of cattle rustling and appealed to security agencies to investigate the incident and help restore calm. Community leaders demand arrests The National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, Bulus Dabit, confirmed the deaths of the five travellers around Gana-Ropp and called on security agencies to find those responsible. Pyem Youth Leader Ukasha Garaba similarly said five bodies were evacuated from Gana-Ropp following the attack and described the victims as labourers travelling as passengers. The identities and motives of the perpetrators had not been conclusively established in the broadly corroborated reporting reviewed by Tokenpress. While some reports attributed responsibility to particular groups, those claims have not been presented here as established fact because comprehensive findings from security authorities were not available. Security operations continue in Plateau The latest violence occurred as security forces were conducting separate operations against suspected criminal groups in Plateau State. Operation Enduring Peace said troops rescued two kidnapping victims and arrested 11 suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate during operations around Shere, Gwafan and Maza Hills. Weapons were also reported recovered during separate operations. Those arrests were part of security operations and should not be interpreted as establishing a connection between the suspects and the Barkin Ladi and Riyom killings unless authorities subsequently announce such a link. The new attacks also followed another deadly episode earlier in September. On September 15, PUNCH reported that 13 people had been killed in separate incidents in Jos South, Mangu and Riyom, including passengers whose vehicle was attacked near Dungus community. Following those earlier incidents, the Plateau State Government condemned the violence and appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies while avoiding retaliatory attacks that could worsen tensions. Governor Caleb Mutfwang has since reiterated his administration's commitment to protecting residents and working with security agencies to confront criminal violence in the state. For communities affected by the latest incidents, however, attention is now focused on whether additional security deployments can prevent further attacks and whether investigators can identify and prosecute those responsible.
