King Oyo dies at 34 after 31 years on Uganda’s Tooro throne

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the monarch of Uganda’s historic Tooro Kingdom, has died at the age of 34, bringing an end to a remarkable reign that began when he was only three years old. The Tooro Kingdom confirmed the monarch’s death on Thursday night, August 27, 2026. King Oyo died at about 10pm, according to the kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. His death came after the kingdom had earlier appealed to the public to pray for the monarch, who had reportedly been critically ill. The specific cause of death has not been officially disclosed. Akiiki, while announcing the development, described the monarch’s death as a major loss to the royal family, the people of Tooro and Uganda as a whole. He also urged the people of the kingdom to remain calm and united as arrangements for the mourning period are made. King Oyo’s story was unusual from the beginning. He became the Omukama, or King, of Tooro in September 1995 following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. At just three years old, the young prince inherited the throne and became one of the youngest monarchs in modern history. Because of his age, the kingdom was initially administered under a regency until he was old enough to take on greater responsibilities. By 2010, at the age of 18, King Oyo formally assumed full control of the kingdom. His long reign subsequently made him internationally recognised as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. Over the years, Oyo grew from a child king into a prominent cultural figure in Uganda. He represented the Tooro Kingdom at various events and was involved in initiatives focused on young people, education, culture and community development. His death has sparked mourning across Uganda, with political leaders, cultural figures and members of the public paying tribute to the late monarch. Attention has now shifted to the future of the Tooro throne. The kingdom’s Prime Minister confirmed that King Oyo left behind a prince who is expected to succeed him. However, the identity of the heir will be announced at the appropriate time, in accordance with Tooro customs and traditions. The kingdom has also begun preparations for the mourning period, with subjects gathering at the Muchwa Kingdom complex in Fort Portal as officials make arrangements for the funeral and succession process. King Oyo’s death marks the end of a 31-year journey that began in childhood and made him one of Africa’s most recognisable traditional rulers.
