Catholic Priest Dies After Giant Crucifix Falls on Him During Livestreamed Mass in Ecuador

A Catholic priest in Ecuador has died after a large wooden crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass at a church in the southwestern city of Guayaquil.
The priest, identified as Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, was conducting the service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Saturday, October 17, when the crucifix mounted behind the altar suddenly detached from the wall and struck him.
The incident occurred during a Mass being broadcast live on social media, allowing viewers to witness the moment worshippers began shouting for help.
According to the Associated Press, footage of the service showed the heavy crucifix falling onto Sánchez as he faced the congregation. He appeared unaware of the danger behind him before the structure struck him on the head.
Worshippers immediately reacted to the incident, with some calling for an ambulance and others rushing towards the priest to assist him.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil subsequently confirmed his death, expressing condolences to his family, friends and fellow members of the Catholic religious community.
Archdiocese Confirms Priest's Death
In a statement, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil identified Sánchez Molinari as the parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in its Central Vicariate.
The statement announced his death in religious language, saying that the priest had departed to the Father's House to enjoy God's presence and glory.
The archdiocese also expressed its solidarity and support for the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the religious order to which he belonged, as well as his relatives and friends.
The church authority did not provide further details about the circumstances that led to the crucifix falling.
Local authorities had also not publicly commented on the incident in the reports available at the time of publication.
Incident Captured During Live Broadcast
The accident happened while the evening Mass was being streamed online.
Footage described by the Associated Press showed the crucifix detaching from the wall above the altar before falling onto the priest. Congregants could be heard crying out for help as the broadcast continued.
The incident subsequently attracted attention online because the accident occurred in front of worshippers and viewers following the religious service remotely.
The livestream was later taken down, according to NBC News, which reported that it had reviewed footage of the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the crucifix's collapse remain unclear. No official explanation had been provided in the reports reviewed to establish whether the incident resulted from a problem with the mounting, structural deterioration or another cause.
Priest Belonged to Redemptorist Religious Order
Sánchez Molinari was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists.
The Roman Catholic religious order was founded in 1732 and has a presence in numerous countries around the world.
The priest had served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil. Reports from Ecuador also indicated that he had previously served for several years at a parish in Vinces, where members of the local Catholic community mourned his death.
His death prompted expressions of grief from the archdiocese and the wider religious community.
The tragedy has drawn attention to the dangers posed by the unexpected collapse of heavy fixtures inside places of worship, although the specific cause of the accident has yet to be established.
As the Catholic community mourns Sánchez Molinari, questions about what caused the crucifix to detach from the wall remain unanswered.
