First Lady Oluremi Tinubu To Visit Abia State On Tuesday

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is scheduled to visit Abia State on Tuesday, 21 July, 2026, to celebrate the state's renowned Akwete weaving heritage. The visit was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu. According to the statement, the First Lady will be received by Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Priscilla Otti. A major highlight of the visit will be a tour of the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area, where Senator Tinubu will interact with master weavers and observe the centuries-old craft that has earned Akwete textiles international recognition. "During the visit, Senator Tinubu will interact with master weavers and witness first-hand the craftsmanship that has made Akwete textiles globally recognised," the statement read. Civic reception planned Following the inspection, the First Lady and Governor Otti will proceed to the Akwete Central School Field for a grand civic reception scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. According to the state government, the event is aimed at celebrating the historic visit while showcasing Akwete's rich cultural heritage to the nation. The reception is expected to attract government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, stakeholders and residents. Prince Okey Kanu said the Abia State Government has invited residents, particularly those in Ukwa East Local Government Area and neighbouring communities, to come out in large numbers to give the First Lady a warm reception. Akwete cloth, which has been handwoven for centuries in Ukwa East Local Government Area, remains one of Nigeria's most celebrated traditional textiles and serves as a major source of livelihood for many women in the community.
