German Embassy Warns Nigerians Against Visa Agents, Says No One Can Guarantee Approval

The German Missions in Nigeria have warned visa applicants against paying agents or intermediaries who promise guaranteed visa approvals, secured jobs in Germany or preferential access to appointment slots.
In advisories published on Wednesday, the missions stressed that they do not work with visa agents and urged Nigerians to obtain information about application procedures directly from official German government platforms.
“We do not work with any ‘Visa Agents’!” the embassy stated, adding that information on visa requirements and procedures was freely available on its website.
The warning follows reports of applicants paying substantial sums to individuals who claim they can secure employment and visas through special connections. According to the embassy’s advisory, some applicants who paid these fees later discovered that the promises made to them were false.
The missions emphasised that visa decisions are made by the relevant German authorities based on each applicant’s eligibility and supporting documents. Paying an intermediary does not guarantee approval or give an applicant special influence over the decision.
Applicants were also reminded that booking a visa appointment through the official system is free. The embassy advised Nigerians not to pay third parties merely to obtain an appointment.
The missions further cautioned against sending documents by email in an attempt to secure appointments, urging applicants to follow the prescribed process for their particular visa category.
Nigerians seeking to travel to Germany are advised to establish the correct visa category based on the purpose and duration of their intended stay. Short visits, such as tourism and family visits, generally require a Schengen visa, which permits stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Longer stays for purposes such as employment or study generally require a national visa.
The German Missions also clarified that the Consular Services Portal applies to certain long-stay visa categories and should not be mistaken for a universal application route for every type of visa.
According to the German mission’s official visa guidance, applicants should identify the office responsible for their application, prepare the required documents and book an appointment through the appropriate official system. Applicants must also attend their appointments in person when required to submit documents and provide biometric information.
The German Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for most visa applications in Nigeria, although certain applicants residing in specified northern states may fall under the jurisdiction of the Embassy in Abuja, subject to the applicable rules and exceptions.
The embassy encouraged applicants who are uncertain about requirements or procedures to contact the relevant German mission directly rather than relying on unverified advice from intermediaries.
The latest warning forms part of the missions’ continuing efforts to address misinformation surrounding visa applications and protect Nigerians from financial losses associated with fraudulent promises.
Applicants can consult the official German Missions in Nigeria website for visa categories, documentation requirements and appointment procedures before beginning their applications.
