 Nearly three decades after the shocking death of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, a jury has found Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of murder in connection with the 1996 shooting that killed the hip-hop icon. Davis, a 63-year-old former gang leader, was convicted of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon by a jury in Clark County, Nevada, following an 11-day trial in Las Vegas. The verdict brings a major development to one of the most famous unsolved murder cases in the history of American music. Prosecutors accused Davis of playing a central role in organising the drive-by shooting that led to Tupac's death. According to the prosecution, the events that led to the shooting began hours earlier when members of Tupac's entourage allegedly attacked Davis's nephew at a Las Vegas casino. Prosecutors argued that Davis was enraged by the incident and decided to retaliate. Later that night, Tupac was travelling as a passenger in a BMW when a white Cadillac reportedly pulled alongside the vehicle at a red light. Gunfire erupted, leaving Tupac seriously injured. The rapper died six days later at the age of 25. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Davis acquired a firearm, gathered others and took part in the search for Tupac following the earlier confrontation. They further alleged that Davis handed the gun to another person inside the Cadillac and ordered that Tupac be shot. Davis was the only surviving person who was reportedly inside the Cadillac at the time of the shooting. The case remained unsolved for decades, becoming one of the biggest mysteries in entertainment history. However, prosecutors relied heavily on statements Davis reportedly made over the years, including comments in interviews and his 2019 memoir. Davis had reportedly spoken publicly about his alleged involvement in the events surrounding Tupac's killing. However, during the trial, his defence team argued that his statements were fiction and exaggerations made to promote his book. His lawyer also argued that there was no evidence directly linking Davis to the murder apart from his own statements. Despite the defence, the jury found Davis guilty after deliberating for nearly three hours. Davis is expected to be sentenced on October 13, 2026, and faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. He has reportedly indicated that he plans to appeal. The conviction represents the closest the decades-long Tupac Shakur murder case has come to legal closure, finally providing a jury's verdict on the role of the man accused of orchestrating the death of one of hip-hop's greatest legends.
