Orezi Draws the Line, Vows to End Friendships Over Lindsay Clancy Support

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Orezi has sparked reactions online after declaring that he would cut ties with friends who show support for Lindsay Clancy, the American mother accused of killing her three young children. Orezi, whose real name is Esegine Allen, made his position known in a post on his Instagram Story following the mistrial in Clancy’s high-profile murder case. The singer said anyone who supports Clancy “in any type of way,” regardless of how they interpret the circumstances surrounding the case, should consider their friendship with him over. Orezi further questioned the reasoning of anyone who sympathises with Clancy, making it clear that he would not be willing to overlook such a position among his friends. “Your reasoning is impaired and I can’t deal with such,” the singer stated. He took his warning a step further, saying that if the disagreement over the case eventually resulted in an argument, he would be prepared to confront the person. “Na fight we go fight,” Orezi declared. His comments come amid renewed public debate surrounding Clancy’s case after a Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial following the jury’s failure to reach a unanimous verdict. Clancy, a former labour and delivery nurse, was accused of strangling her three children — five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan — at their family home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. During the trial, her defence argued that she was not criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and the effects of psychiatric medication. Prosecutors, however, maintained that the killings were deliberate. After several weeks of proceedings and lengthy jury deliberations, the jury failed to reach a verdict, leading to the mistrial. The development has continued to fuel discussions about mental illness, criminal responsibility and accountability. Clancy remains in a state psychiatric hospital, while a status hearing is scheduled for September 29. Prosecutors are expected to determine whether the case will be retried.
