Dolly Parton Dies at 80 After Brief Battle With Cancer Country music icon Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, according to reports from US media. Parton’s death was announced by her family on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than six decades. Her representatives later confirmed that the legendary singer died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones. The type of cancer she had was not disclosed. The revelation comes after months of health concerns surrounding the singer, who had scaled back some of her public activities in recent months. In May, Parton announced that she was postponing a planned Las Vegas residency because she was not in a condition to perform at her usual level. She had also spoken publicly about health challenges involving her kidneys, immune system and digestive system. Despite those challenges, Parton remained active and continued working on music and other projects. Just days before her death, she spoke about facing difficult times with her health while maintaining her characteristic optimism. Born in Tennessee, Parton rose from a poor childhood to become one of the most influential figures in country music. Her career produced enduring hits including Jolene, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You, while her songwriting, acting and business ventures expanded her influence far beyond music. She was also widely recognised for her philanthropy, particularly through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which has provided hundreds of millions of books to children. Parton’s death comes about 17 months after the death of her husband, Carl Dean, with whom she had been married for nearly 60 years. Dean died in March 2025 at the age of 82. Tributes have since poured in for Parton, whose career and charitable work made her one of the most recognisable and enduring figures in American entertainment. Her representatives said she spent her life bringing joy, hope and kindness to others, leaving behind a legacy that extended well beyond her music.
