Trump Says He Does Not Want Norwegian Immigrants After Nobel Peace Prize Snub

United States President Donald Trump has said he does not want Norwegian immigrants in the country, linking his remarks to his failure to win the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump made the comments on Sunday during a political rally in Port Huron, Michigan, where he criticised Norway following the Nobel Committee’s decision to award this year’s peace prize to South African jurist Navi Pillay.
“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually,” Trump said, according to reports by international news agencies.
The American president also said he would welcome immigrants from Denmark but not Norway, expressing frustration over the decision to overlook him for the prestigious award.
“I didn’t get the Nobel Prize, so I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he said.
Trump has repeatedly argued that his diplomatic efforts and involvement in resolving international conflicts make him deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. He has claimed credit for settling eight wars, although the extent of his role in some of the conflicts he cited has been disputed.
The Nobel Committee announced Pillay as the 2026 laureate on October 9, recognising her work in support of international law and human rights.
Trump subsequently criticised the decision, describing it as disgraceful and embarrassing. He also accused those responsible for selecting the winner of discrediting the award.
Norwegian officials have responded by emphasising that the country's government does not decide who receives the Nobel Peace Prize.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said the president was aware that the Nobel Committee operated independently of the government.
The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee is appointed by Norway's parliament. Members of the government and serving lawmakers are barred from sitting on the committee.
There was no indication that Trump's remarks represented a new official immigration policy targeting Norwegian nationals.
The comments come ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, during a period of heightened political debate over immigration.
Trump's latest criticism adds to his longstanding public frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, an award he has repeatedly said he deserves for his diplomatic record.
