Anambra CP Queries DPO, Two Officers Over Missing Armed Robbery Suspect

The Anambra State Police Commissioner, Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered disciplinary action and a detailed investigation after an armed robbery suspect reportedly arrested and taken to a police station could no longer be accounted for.
Ama directed that queries be issued to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of the 3-3 Police Station and a Deputy Superintendent of Police, while disciplinary proceedings were ordered against an Inspector of Police over the incident.
The development followed the circulation of a viral video alleging that the suspect, who was reportedly arrested and brought to the station, had subsequently disappeared from police custody.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the commissioner took the decision on Monday, October 5, 2026, after personally interviewing the complainant and the police officers involved.
Police launch investigation into suspect's whereabouts
The police command said the Commissioner considered the allegation serious because of its potential to undermine public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
Ama consequently directed the command's X-Squad to investigate the circumstances surrounding the suspect's arrest, detention and subsequent whereabouts.
The investigation is also expected to examine the documentation of the suspect and the roles and responsibilities of the police officers who handled the case.
The command said the investigation would be used to establish what happened and determine whether any officer breached established procedures.
The police have not publicly identified the suspect in the statement, nor have they disclosed exactly how or when he allegedly disappeared from custody.
The command also did not announce that any of the officers involved had been found guilty of misconduct. The queries and disciplinary proceedings form part of an ongoing process to establish the facts.
CP warns against police misconduct
Ama said the command would not tolerate what he described as unprofessional conduct, dereliction of duty, abuse of office or any compromise of established procedures by police personnel.
He also stressed that accountability would remain an important part of his leadership of the command and that police officers would be subject to scrutiny where allegations of misconduct arise.
The commissioner directed the command to put operational measures in place to facilitate the re-arrest of the suspect.
He also assured members of the public that the outcome of the investigation would be communicated once the facts surrounding the case had been established.
Viral video prompts police response
The matter came to public attention after a viral video raised questions over the whereabouts of the suspect allegedly arrested in connection with armed robbery.
Rather than treating the claims in the video as established facts, the police commissioner ordered officers to investigate the arrest, detention records and subsequent handling of the suspect.
The command's response therefore does not establish that the suspect escaped, was released improperly or was unlawfully removed from custody. Those circumstances remain subject to investigation.
The police also cautioned members of the public against circulating unverified information that could interfere with or prejudice the investigation.
Ama urged that the facts be established through due process while the command works to determine what happened to the suspect.
The identities of the officers facing queries and disciplinary proceedings have also not been released publicly.
The development comes as the Anambra Police Command attempts to determine how a suspect reportedly brought into police custody could no longer be accounted for and whether established procedures were breached in the process.
Until the investigation is completed, the circumstances surrounding the suspect's disappearance and any possible responsibility on the part of individual officers remain unresolved.
The command said it would communicate the outcome once the facts have been established.
