FG Begins Construction of 120MVA Power Substation in Katsina

The Federal Government has commenced construction of a 120-megavolt-ampere (MVA) electricity transmission substation in Mashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, with completion scheduled for March 2027.
The project, being executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), is expected to strengthen electricity transmission and improve the delivery of available power to Katsina and neighbouring communities.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Friday during the groundbreaking ceremony in Mashi. He explained that the facility would comprise two 60MVA transformers, providing a combined transmission capacity of 120MVA, equivalent to approximately 96 megawatts.
According to Tegbe, the project is intended to strengthen the transmission network and support economic activities among farmers, traders, artisans and households.
He said compensation issues affecting the project had been resolved and urged TCN officials, the contractor and supervising engineers to ensure that construction meets the required standards and deadline.
Tegbe also called on residents to protect the facility against vandalism, stressing that community cooperation would be important during construction and after the substation becomes operational.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda commended President Bola Tinubu for approving three transmission substation projects for the state. He described the investments as important to improving electricity infrastructure and supporting economic development.
Radda said the state government would continue collaborating with the Federal Government on projects intended to improve public welfare and create economic opportunities.
The governor also highlighted the ongoing railway project linking Kano, Daura and Katsina, with an extension towards Maradi in Niger Republic, as another infrastructure initiative expected to benefit the state.
He further disclosed that components for a proposed 10-megawatt hybrid power project combining wind and solar energy had arrived in Nigeria. The initiative involves cooperation between the Federal Government and Katsina State Government and is intended to strengthen local electricity generation.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, TCN, Kano Electricity Distribution Company, Katsina State Government, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
The new substation forms part of efforts to reinforce Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure. However, the additional capacity will improve the network’s ability to transmit available electricity; it does not, by itself, guarantee uninterrupted power supply to households and businesses.
With completion scheduled for March 2027, the project is expected to expand transmission capacity in Katsina and support electricity delivery across surrounding communities.
