A devastating wave of flooding and landslides across Nepal and China’s Tibet region has left at least 633 people dead, while nearly 3,000 others are still missing. The disaster struck with terrifying speed, sending huge volumes of water, mud and debris through villages and communities near the Nepal-China border. More than 2,400 people in Nepal are currently unaccounted for, including foreign nationals, trekkers, pilgrims and workers involved in major hydropower projects. In Tibet, 554 people remain missing, according to Chinese state media. Authorities have also evacuated hundreds of stranded tourists and residents from affected areas. Thousands Still Missing The situation has become particularly serious in Nepal's Trishuli valley, where several hydropower projects were badly affected by the floods. Rescue workers have been searching for people trapped inside tunnels at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project. Hundreds of workers and residents have already been rescued, but more than 100 people were reportedly still trapped as rescue operations continued. Survivors described scenes of destruction, saying entire settlements close to the river were swept away. The International Red Cross said the disaster may have affected as many as 93,000 people, warning that the humanitarian impact could become even greater as food and clean water supplies become harder to obtain. Fresh Flooding Threatens Rescue Efforts Rescue operations have also been complicated by the possibility of more flooding. Large amounts of ice, mud and water have created dangerous temporary lakes in some areas. Nepalese authorities warned rescuers to move to safer locations after receiving reports that another water barrier had burst on the Tibetan side. Meanwhile, authorities in China temporarily suspended rescue efforts in the worst-hit part of Gyirong because of the renewed flood threat. Pilgrims Among the Missing The disaster has also affected people travelling to Mount Kailash, a sacred pilgrimage destination in Tibet. Many pilgrims were caught on the roads when the floodwaters suddenly surged through the area. One survivor, Sivaranjani Muthunathan, said vehicles around her were swept away or buried in mud as people desperately climbed to higher ground.
