How stray bullet killed Niger varsity 400-level student

A 400-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Isma’il Ishaq Magaji, was killed by a stray bullet during a land dispute in his hometown of Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area of the state. Magaji, a student of Public Administration, was reportedly preparing for his final examinations when the incident occurred. According to information obtained by PUNCH, the land dispute in the Wawa community reportedly triggered sporadic gunfire involving a military task force. Magaji was allegedly caught in the shooting and sustained a fatal gunshot injury. How the student ended up at home Magaji had initially remained at the university while waiting to sit for his final examinations, which were expected to begin around September 5. However, an indefinite strike by the university's chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities disrupted the examination schedule. After spending about two weeks waiting for the industrial action to end, Magaji eventually decided to return to his hometown. A course mate, Ahmed Yakassai, said the decision proved fatal as Magaji did not return to the university before his death. University confirms his death The university confirmed Magaji's death through its Deputy Registrar, Information, Baba Akote. The institution said the student died after being struck by a stray bullet during the land dispute in Wawa. Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammed Sulaiman described the incident as a painful loss to the university community and extended condolences to Magaji's family, friends and classmates. He also appealed to the communities involved in the dispute to resolve their differences through dialogue and exercise restraint to prevent further deaths. Course mates mourn promising student Magaji's death has left his classmates mourning a colleague they described as calm, friendly and accommodating. One of his course mates, Yahaya Lawal, said the deceased should have been preparing for his final examinations and looking forward to completing his university education. Lawal also expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the student's death, particularly the fact that he was reportedly killed during a security operation linked to the land dispute. Police deny involvement The circumstances surrounding the shooting have also drawn attention to the identity of the personnel who fired the bullet. The Niger State Police Command declined to give a detailed account of the land dispute or the shooting. However, its spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, stated that the police were not responsible for the stray bullet that killed Magaji. Earlier reports had described the shooting as occurring during a military operation following the communal land dispute, although the circumstances could not initially be independently verified. Magaji's death has therefore raised fresh concerns about the danger civilians face when armed security operations take place around communities involved in violent disputes. As the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under scrutiny, the university management has urged the affected communities to pursue peaceful dialogue and prevent further loss of life.
