 Serious tension has reportedly gripped parts of Calabar, Cross River State, after two men suspected of robbery were killed by an angry mob following an alleged mobile phone theft. Their alleged actions reportedly attracted the attention of people in the area, who apprehended them and accused them of belonging to a robbery gang operating around the community. The situation quickly turned violent as the mob reportedly attacked the suspects and set them ablaze before security operatives arrived. Both men died at the scene. A resident, Bassey Etim, claimed that phone and property theft had become a growing concern in the area, particularly involving students. He said the suspects were allegedly caught while trying to flee after taking phones from residents. However, another resident, Effanga Effanga, strongly condemned the killing, stressing that no suspected crime should justify mob justice. He appealed to the police and other security agencies to increase patrols and investigate reports of robbery around Ekpo Abasi. The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said officers were informed about the mob attack and quickly went to the location. According to the police, officers found the two unidentified men severely burnt.
